Where to find texture to photograph

In the previous post, I reviewed comparing texture photography to textures in abstract and impressionistic art,  how to compose, and shoot textures. Textures are everywhere; we just have to take time to slow down, think about how to capture them, and showcase their detail. Here are some ideas to get you started.

Nature

Natural settings are a great place to start. Whether it is walking through a local park, gardens, or just your neighborhood, there are textures everywhere. Think about tree bark, grasses, plants, sand, weeds, even dirt all be interesting to photograph.

Home

There is texture all around you at home. The kitchen sink, furniture, cabinets are full of texture. Think about rice, beans, coffee, water, ice, wood cutting boards, glass. Fabric, bedsheets, ironing board cover, towels, fuzzy sweaters, paint. The list goes on and on!

Architecture

Brick walls, wood, peeling paint, glass, textured walls, grates in sidewalks all can make for compelling texture images.

Water

Where there is water, there will be lots of textures. Whether it is a river, local pond, beach, river, you can find textures. Look for natural items near the water, boats, plants, sand, shells, and even the water itself.

The great thing about texture photography is that you can capture textures anytime, anyplace. Taking time to focus on texture will help ignite your senses and overall improve your photography over time. In the last post of this series, I will share editing tips for texture images.
